How Studying in the Netherlands has Impacted my Future Goals

Juan Colmenares Bitar, Plus3 Netherlands, Summer 2026

Before studying abroad, I knew I wanted to work in the renewable energy industry, but I was not very sure what I wanted my career to look like. Spending two weeks in the Netherlands helped me see what is possible within the bounds of what I am studying and made me even more excited about my major. One of the biggest things I noticed was how renewable energy is part of everyday life in the Netherlands. We saw offshore wind projects, learned about clean energy technologies, and got the chance to experience how the country is investing in sustainable solutions. Being in the country, I finally got the chance to see them in action and hear directly from the people working on them. As a Natural Gas, Renewables, and Oil Engineering major, I have become most interested in the renewable energy side of the industry. This trip confirmed that it is the direction I want to pursue after graduation. Seeing how different organizations work together to solve energy challenges showed me that there are many ways to make a meaningful impact. It got me excited to be part of an industry that is helping build a more sustainable future. The experience also helped me grow personally. Being in a different country and meeting professionals from different backgrounds, I learned how another country approaches energy different to the views of my own. It reminded me that there is always something new to learn and that being mindful can make you a better engineer and a better person. Studying abroad gave me a clearer sense of direction. It strengthened my interest in renewable energy and showed me that this is where I want to build my career. Now at home, I have a better understanding of the challenges the energy industry faces, but also a lot of confidence in our capabilities to create a positive change. This experience gave me motivation to keep learning, take advantage of new opportunities, and work toward a career where I can help create cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.
