How Studying Abroad in London Changed Me

Clarissa Miranda, Dietrich to London, Summer 2026

People always say that studying abroad is a life-changing experience, and I would agree. If you are an underclassman on the fence about whether to study abroad or not, do it. The truth about this once in a lifetime experience is that it broadens your horizons and promotes personal growth. In life, you never want to have regrets, and I am so glad I went to London. However, my one regret is that I did not do it for a whole semester.

I chose to study abroad because I wanted to see changes in my normal routine. By staying in one place, you get comfortable with your routine and lifestyle. Going abroad and experiencing new things pushes you to find yourself and do things you normally would not think of ever doing. As someone who is usually afraid of doing things on her own, I found myself solo traveling, taking impromptu trips around the city, and truly immersing myself as a local.

I also have a non-school related goal that came from this study abroad experience. I want to start traveling more and exploring the world, whether that is something I do before pursuing further education or after. Being abroad really shifts your perspective on daily life because it makes you more aware of how others are living completely different lives than you, which is beautiful. I really want to experience more out of life, while also getting to learn about other cultures and seeing ethereal sights.

On a more career focused note, doing an internship abroad taught me a lot about what I want in the workplace after post-graduate. Ideally, I want to work for a company that is organized, hybrid, and has employees like me and enjoy collaboration. The company I was interning for was exceedingly small, was a bit unorganized, and everyone was different from me aside from the other interns. Working abroad has always been on the back burner, but now it has become a bigger thought, and I am thinking about living and working abroad soon.
