Living abroad was filled with numerous aspects that contributed to my overall experience. Being independent was a big factor in my experience. Although the program was very supportive and available, making sure to listen to yourself is crucial.
On the days when we were active, walking around, experiencing different weather temperatures, trying different foods and seeing other students become sick, it was crucial to make sure one was not pushing themselves too hard and knowing when they could or could not do something. Being independent means making sure you
are taking care of yourself and also not relying on other people to determine your experience. Everyone who came on the trip owed themselves the chance to see everything they could because it is such a privilege to study abroad. Not being afraid to try something new, branch out and tour different parts became a lesson that I found the most valuable.
During my program, there was a part of the program where the students had a free weekend to venture out and see nearby countries or stay and tour the unseen parts of the city. I ended up being the only person who stayed back to tour
the city, and it became one of the highlights of my trip.
Being open-minded, adaptable and respectful were also big parts. Coming into a country that you are not used to comes with its own societal norms. When I went, it was polite to not talk loudly while walking or on public transportation. Following these norms showed that I respected and valued the preexisting environment that had been built.
