What Stood Out To Me About Suriname

Kareema Dean, Public Health Threats in Suriname, Summer 2026

The public health threats study abroad really helped me to learn more about the impact of public health on communties around the world. This program particularly stood out to me because, as a participant in the program, I have been able to visit a new country and discover public health challenges firsthand. Thus, the program has enabled me to integrate my knowledge into practice and explore the factors that may affect the health of the population, such as environmental, social, cultural, and economic factors.

Another significant feature of this program is the ability to discover various aspects of public health threats from a global perspective. In this regard, Suriname has presented me with the unique opportunity to explore the issues of infectious diseases, environmental health, healthcare access, and disease prevention from a global point of view. In addition to the theoretical knowledge, I have had a chance to see how the theories are implemented and find out which of them work and which do not work in practice.

The culture of Suriname is yet another interesting part of the study program. The people of Suriname represent various cultures and beliefs. It made me understand the importance of cultural competence when working in the area of public health. While addressing the needs of a certain community, one should always take into account the beliefs, traditions, and the background of the community to be able to use the proper approach to solve the problem.

The relationship between the environment and public health in Suriname is another aspect that attracts my attention. While studying the environment of Suriname, I came to understand that the environment has a great influence on the appearance of public health threats. It helped me to understand that public health presupposes protection of the environment, prevention of diseases, education, and provision of the necessary resources.

Thus, by participating in the study abroad program concerning Public Health Threats in Suriname, I have learned some new things concerning the subject. The experience that I got in Suriname challenged me to change my attitude towards public health issues and their resolution and understand the importance of global cooperation and culture in public health management.
