What Stands Out About Bilbao

Kyla Spengler, Plus3 Nursing: Bilbao, Summer 2026

When I first arrived in Bilbao, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had heard it was a beautiful city in northern Spain, but I quickly realized it was so much more than that. One of the first things that stood out to me was how clean, modern, and walkable the city is. Almost everywhere I wanted to go was within walking distance, and if it wasn’t, the public transportation system made getting around incredibly easy. Whether I was walking along the river, taking the metro, or exploring different neighborhoods, I always felt like there was something new to discover.

One thing I loved most about Bilbao was how it perfectly blends old and new. In one area, you can walk through narrow streets filled with historic buildings and small local shops, and just a few minutes later you can find yourself surrounded by modern architecture. Seeing that contrast made the city feel unique because it preserved its history while continuing to grow and evolve.

The atmosphere in Bilbao also felt very different from what I’m used to in the United States. People seemed to spend much more time outdoors. Every evening, parks, plazas, and outdoor cafés filled with families and friends enjoying each other’s company. Instead of constantly rushing from one place to another, people seemed to slow down and appreciate their surroundings. It made me realize how important it is to make time for the people around you rather than always focusing on being busy.

Another thing that stood out was how safe I felt while exploring the city. Whether I was walking during the day or in the evening with friends, I felt comfortable experiencing everything Bilbao had to offer. That gave me the confidence to become more independent and explore places I normally might have been hesitant to visit.

The scenery throughout the city was another highlight of my experience. Bilbao is surrounded by green mountains while also being close to the coast, creating incredible views everywhere you look. Even simple walks became memorable because there was always something beautiful to see.

Overall, Bilbao exceeded every expectation I had before arriving. The combination of beautiful scenery, welcoming people, rich culture, and relaxed lifestyle made it a place I will always remember. It taught me that sometimes the best experiences come from simply slowing down, exploring, and appreciating a new environment.
