Two Pieces of Advice for Anyone Studying Abroad

Studying abroad is an exciting experience, but it can feel overwhelming, especially when you are moving to a new country that you have never been to before. After going through it myself, I have two key pieces of advice that I believe can help make the transition smoother and the experience amazing.

1. Know Your City Before you leave

One of the most important things you can do before studying abroad is to understand the layout of the city you’ll be living in. Start by figuring out your housing situation. Some universities offer housing for international students, while others do not. If your university doesn’t provide housing, you may need to find an off-campus apartment. And if that’s not immediately possible, make sure you have a temporary place to stay. This can either be a hotel or hostel. The last thing you want is to be in a different country without knowing where you sleep.

I was lucky that my university offered housing, but I know a friend who wasn’t as fortunate. He arrived in the country before his program started and stayed in a hostel until he could find an apartment. It worked out for him, but it required extra planning and flexibility.

Once housing is sorted out, think about transportation. How will you get around the city? Will you rent a car or rely on public transportation? If you’re using public transport2, find out which ones to take. Knowing how to get from point A to point B will make your new city feel much less intimidating. Google maps always works abroad but they don’t track the transports. You can ask the locals when you arrive what apps they use to track.

2. Learn to Say “Yes”

My second piece of advice is simple but powerful: say “yes”. This doesn’t mean saying yes to everything without thinking, your health and studies should still be you top priorities, but being open to opportunities that come your way would greatly elevate your study abroad experience.

Saying yes can lead to new friendships, unforgettable memories, and fresh perspectives on life. If your university offers a welcome week or orientation activities, try to attend as many events as you can. These events are designed to help students connect, and even if you don’t find your closest friends right away, they can help you feel less alone in a new environment.

During my university’s welcome week, I met a group of people I didn’t end up staying close with as a whole. However, I formed a strong friendship with one person from that group, and now I’m visiting her when I return. That connection never would have happened if I hadn’t shown up and said yes.

Conclusion

Studying abroad is more than just attending classes in a different country, it’s about learning how to navigate unfamiliar spaces, cultures, and experiences. By taking the time to understand your city and prepare for daily life, you set yourself up for confidence and stability from the start. And by learning to say yes, you open the door to meaningful connections and unforgettable memories.

Not every moment abroad will be easy, but the challenges often become the most valuable lessons. With preparation, openness, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone, studying abroad can become one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.
