Abigayle Retter, Pitt in Florence Fall 2025
My daily life was much more relaxed in Florence than at Pitt. Each morning, I started my day by making coffee with a moka pot. In the US, I have a coffee machine that I press a few buttons on and get my coffee. A moka pot takes more time and has more steps before I can enjoy my coffee. It taught me to slow down more and enjoy the process. It was rough at first, but by the end of the semester, I knew I would miss my slow mornings.

Once I was ready, I would walk to class. Each of CeaCapa’s buildings was only about five minutes away. During my short walks, I took the opportunity to clear my mind and take in the beauty all around me. One of my favorite parts of studying in Florence was being surrounded by stunning architecture anywhere you go. The sights never got old.
My favorite classes were Renaissance Art History and Museology with Professor Morici. She took us to a new museum or church nearly every class. It was a perfect way to explore the city and all of the art Florence has to offer.
After coming back home, the thing I miss the most about Florence was the walkability. I went on a longer walk every day while calling my friends and family or listening to music. I was able to explore a lot of the city this way, and it made me feel more comfortable and at home. It was also the perfect exercise while eating pizza and pasta for four months.
I enjoy cooking and have made a lot of meals at home. However, I would never turn down an opportunity to try a new restaurant with my friends.
My days in Florence were relaxing, slow, and enjoyable. It taught me to take time to enjoy the little things in life. Everything else can wait for la dolce vita.
