Impacts Beyond My Semester Abroad

Kiera Giacometti, AIFS in London, Fall 2025

I took over AIFS Abroad’s Instagram at the end of October. One question I was asked
during this takeover was “Why did you choose to study abroad in London?” I answered
honestly: Well, you see, I watched Doctor Who in fourth grade and became unreasonably obsessed with the city. So, I knew I wanted to visit London. Then, I decided I actually wanted to go get my Master’s Degree here. So, this is a trial run.

And what a trial run it was. I cannot stress enough how altered my life trajectory is after spending three months away in London. I learned that I value a productive work-life balance more than I thought. I want to pick a career that allows me to travel and enjoy life. I don’t want to be stuck to a chair and computer all day. I want to go to museums and shows, see parts of Europe and Asia that I have never seen, and find joy in the little things. I was so content and fulfilled in London, a feeling I have not fully felt since returning home. Here in America, I feel like I am racing against an invisible opponent. I could leave my internship and school assignments to try new experiences and I never felt like I was wasting time I should have spent on my career. My priorities have clearly shifted. That’s okay. I don’t have to have the same goals I had as a senior in high school. I want to accomplish amazing things, but I no longer want them
to solely exist on my Linkedin and resume.

Speaking of accomplishments, I proved to myself I could live in another country alone. That was extremely gratifying. I know now that I will absolutely apply to University College London for a Master’s Degree in Russian and Eastern Europe Political Analysis, and other political science programs across England and Scotland. I intend to find work in London as well, and maybe one day even move to England.

I am braver now, too. I can travel alone with less anxiety, I make bolder decisions, and I am more confident in standing up for myself. I am willing to take risks; the worst thing anyone will ever say is no.

My time in Europe has irrevocably changed me for the better. Your time abroad will change you too. Before I end this blog, I want to share an interaction I had last week with my high school AP Environmental teacher at the grocery store. I told her a summary of everything I shared here and I ended my conversation with “I really believe now that I can do anything I set my mind to.”

She smiled widely and said, “Of course you can.”

I have been thinking a lot about her response. It rings true for me, and it rings true for you. Whatever path you take, studying abroad or not, you will do great things. Because of course you can.
