Why AJY Heidelberg Stands Out

Kim Heinzelmann, AJY Heidelberg Fall 2025

I have always wanted to study abroad, and that dream has now become a reality for me. I am currently spending a year in Germany as part of the American Junior Year (AJY) at Heidelberg University program, and, throughout the past three months, this program has been all that I could have asked for. It truly stands out for so many reasons.

Even before the sixteen of us participating in the program this semester arrived in Germany, the AJY staff were there to answer questions and help us prepare. The program handles finding and booking housing accommodations for us (we were given five housing options to choose from) and provides an all-inclusive public transportation pass. Once we had arrived, the staff helped us in completing necessary paperwork, guiding us quite literally step-by-step through acquiring our visas and registering as residents of the city of Heidelberg.

The program itself offers total language immersion — within the first week, we signed a “contract” agreeing to only speak German while in the AJY Center — and the first month was dedicated to an intensive language course, designed and intended to help us improve our German skills before the start of the official university semester. This course included a number of excursions, which helped us learn the layout as well as some of the history of the city. Furthermore, we were given the option (though it certainly was not required) to take the DSH, an official German language exam which would provide a certificate showing advanced skills. During that first month, the AJY program hosted a weekly workshop to help prepare us for this exam, and I am very proud to have passed with a score of 2, which was my goal and which indicates a C1 language level.

Beyond the initial intensive language course, the program includes direct enrollment at the University of Heidelberg. The program director serves as our academic advisor, and we each receive individual advising and assistance in choosing and registering for courses as well as contacting professors when necessary. On top of that, the program handles our transcripts and credit conversion at the end of the semester. In addition to classes, it is also possible to pursue an internship during our time abroad. The program director helps us to find and arrange such internships, serving as a point of contact with several local organizations and institutions. I, personally, will be participating in an internship with the German-American institute here in Heidelberg.

Aside from assistance with academics, the program emphasizes the importance of a healthy social life, as well. We were provided with recommendations for student clubs, music ensembles, sport classes/teams, activities within Heidelberg, and even a list of suggested travel destinations. These recommendations led me to a salsa dance class (which is genuinely one of the highlights of each week for me), and some friends and I have made day trips to a few of the suggested cities. Additionally, every Wednesday, there is a conversation hour so that we can practice our German skills and chat with each other. AJY also organizes a couple of programs, including a community service project and a tandem partner program, in which we are each paired with a German student as a conversation partner. Tandem partner events so far have included a board game night, carving pumpkins, bowling, and watching a basketball game together.

The city of Heidelberg itself also stands out. It is a gorgeous place, straddling the Neckar River and overlooked by the ruins of a once-grand Renaissance palace. Heidelberg is home to the oldest university in Germany and has a considerably large international student population. Since arriving in Heidelberg, I have met students from Italy, France, Switzerland, Peru, China, Japan, and New Zealand among others. The city also has sustainability initiatives such as hydrogen-powered public buses and “passive houses,” which require hardly any energy to heat.

All in all, while studying abroad is not without its challenges, I have had a wonderful experience so far as part of the American Junior Year at Heidelberg University program. While I am staying for a full year, there are also semester and summer durations, and I would personally recommend AJY to anyone seeking language-immersion in Germany. Through this program, I have made good friends, improved my language skills, seen new parts of the world, and made my study abroad dreams come true.
