Lillie Heise, Global Health in Spain Summer 2025

Studying abroad in the Global health in Spain program had a major impact on my goals and future. It allowed me to step outside of the U.S. healthcare system and see health through a more global lens. In Spain and Morocco, it showed me how the cultures, the communities, and the environment played a major role in shaping people’s health. It deepened my understanding of social determinants of health which includes housing, food access, education, and social connection.
In Spain I really noticed how the cities were walkable. There was also very accessible and affordable public transportation. And the people had more time to rest, eat together, and enjoy life. Life there did not feel as rushed and it just felt like there was less pressure on people to get so much done in a day. These things are very simple, but they really impact stress levels and physical health of the people. It really showed me how health does not just come from medical care but also the way people live. It helped me think more about preventive care approaches and community health and how I want to be a nurse who advocates for these things, not just treating symptoms.

Experiencing Spain’s universal healthcare system showed me what it looks like when healthcare is treated as a human right. We visited public hospitals, spoke with providers, and saw how care is accessible regardless of a person’s income or background. This experience made me reflect on the inequalities within the U.S. system and made me want to be part of the change. I’m more passionate than ever about pursuing a career that goes beyond the bedside. Whether it’s working in public or international healthcare or even helping shape policy someday, I want to help create a system where everyone has access to quality care.
