Trying Cypriot Drinks and Dishes

Alexis Hammerling, Plus3 Cyprus Summer 2025

Each morning to start my day, I would eat the hotel breakfast that was included in both of the hotels we stayed at. At the first hotel I ordered delicious chocolate pancakes, fresh squeezed orange juice, poached avocado eggs, and fresh yogurts with granola. The first place was more of an American breakfast, however the second place had more of Cypriot dishes. I would get eggs, feta, olives, and bread nearly every morning in Limassol. I would also enjoy a freshly baked croissant from time to time when I woke up late and needed a quick snack for the road. For lunch we would usually eat around 12-1 o’clock and I was always ready to devour my next meal. I would always have souvlaki, or chicken on a stick, with French fries. I tried to Cypriot cheese halloumi however I am more of fan of feta personally. I found myself having a hard time adjusting to the Cypriot food at first. They have their own dishes where they add their own twists to Greek dishes. It was an adjustment from the traditional Greek food that I was used to. These small tweaks surprised me at first, however I was able to appreciate the foods that made Cyprus unique. They make their Cypriot salads just like the Greek ones with tomato, cucumber, feta, and olives, but their twist is that they add lettuce too. I was interesting the difference in the food that make the world a difference. I enjoyed some classic Cypriot delights, and the pastries were delicious. The food overall was amazing, and I never went hungry. There was always something that looked appetizing or smelled delicious. With every meal I would have a crisp Coke with some ice, which was the only time I would have ice in my drinks. The Coca Cola factory was a big source of work for many Cypriots, and I would see the large drunks delivering. I am not the biggest fan of coffee so I didn’t have that much of it when we went to the shops. The Cypriot coffee is extremely strong. It has a very powerful taste and is usually served without milk. In all, the food was one of the highlights of my trip and made each day exciting as I awaited my next meal. Trying new things, even if they weren’t always my favorite, became part of the adventure.
