My Takeaways from Study Abroad in Sydney

Cameron Golden, Global Business Institute: Sydney Spring 2025

Reflecting on my program, there are many things I’m going to miss about the people and the lifestyle in Sydney. There’s something about Australia in general that creates a very peaceful mindset and focuses on your personal well-being. People in Australia really strive to make the most out of every day and make it more about work or school. They spend time doing things that they love to do, and they make time even when they are busy. They have a culture of not working outside of work and pursuing things that make them happy.

I think my path in life has been greatly influenced by the Australian mindset. The culture of United States college students now is to plan out your whole future in your last years of college, and that’s something that’s hard to do when you don’t even know if you truly like the work in your major yet. I’m going to take the flexibility that I have observed from Australian work life and bring it into the plans for my future. I think pursuing something that I really love is important to me now, and I’m going to look into how to do that after spending a few years in the accounting field.

Something that may seem a bit more superficial, but is a big takeaway for me from my time in Australia, is how amazing it is to be near a beach. Sydney is a very unique city with how central it is and having a beach in close proximity. There’s something so freeing about having a place to go aside from home where you can chill and do what you want. For example, I love to read, and the beach provides a very nice place to spend my time just lying down and doing so, but also being outside and observing the beauty of the nature around me. I think this will impact where I choose to live when I’m older and has made me reevaluate how much I love being near a coastline.
