Emilee Coleman, TEAN: Seoul Spring 2025

Before partaking in your experience abroad, there is only so much information you can take in and learn about before leaving the US. Since I had friends that studied abroad before me, I got to hear all about their endeavors and advice for studying abroad, but it only helped so much as in the end, you have to experience living abroad firsthand to learn what it’s like. But I have a few pieces of advice to offer to those who are planning on studying abroad that will help once you’re abroad! First, don’t be afraid to try new things and put yourself out there. I would recommend joining at least 1-2 clubs on campus to get to know other students and quickly make friends. Clubs are also a great way to participate in unique opportunities for free on campus and around your host city. Second, try to experience as much as you can and visit as many cities, towns, and neighborhoods in your host city. The ability to witness and experience a new culture firsthand is very eye-opening, fun, and memorable, so I’d highly recommend getting out as much as you can. But make sure to not fall behind on your academics because depending on your experience, you are there to be a full-time student. So, make sure to show up to class, participate, turn in your homework, and study for your exams or else you will easily fall behind everyone else in the class. Also, don’t feel too pressured to be out all the time and make as many friends as possible. Most people have a social battery, including myself, and if you use up all of your batteries power too soon, you won’t have fun, nor enjoy your experience abroad. So, make sure to prioritize your health and take a weekend off every now and then to rest and recuperate so that you can enjoy your life in another country to the fullest extent! I typically take Sundays off to just focus on myself, and it helps me feel even more refreshed for the week! These are the pieces of advice I have for those who are planning to study through this program!
