Experimenting with Food and Dining in Europe

Morgan Tinney, Pitt in London Spring 2025

London is known for its wide variety of food ranging from classic English meals to international favorites. While I love trying new foods, I have also had to hold back spending money on eating out in order to budget well. On an average weeknight, I eat pre-made items from the grocery store which is different from what I’m used to. When I’m at Pitt, I normally cook most of my meals from scratch as I enjoy experimenting with cooking. However, with having a combination of school, an internship, and traveling I don’t have the time to cook from scratch.

Most of the time when I buy food, it’s during my lunch breaks in between classes and work. My favorite place is a sushi bowl place in Hoxton Square near my work. I frequently visit a sourdough sandwich shop where my favorite sandwich has marmalade on it, something I had never tried beforehand. The best places to get decently priced food are normally at markets or any sort of street food which both offer a variety of international cuisines. On the weekends, I will normally eat at a pub where I have tried classic British food such as fish and chips, mince pie, and a Sunday roast. I also got to experience an authentic British afternoon tea where there was tea, biscuits with jam and clotted cream, sweets, and tea sandwiches! Before coming to England, I heard that British food is disappointing and bland, but I have found it to be rather good and flavorful if you go to the right spots.

Where I get to try the most food is when I’m traveling. I believe that food is an important part of exploring other cultures, which is why I try to only eat food from that country or city in each place I travel to. I have gotten to try Hungarian, Parisian, Spanish, Swiss, Italian, and Danish food. It has also been interesting to adapt to the eating habits and schedules of other cultures. In many countries, they either eat a very small breakfast or skip it and have a large lunch. Although I enjoy trying foods from other cultures, I have still eaten some of the American-style food options in London. Overall, London is a great place to try a wide range of international food, but I recommend researching restaurants beforehand as many of them are overpriced tourist traps when there is an authentic, cheap option right around the corner.
