Tasting Australian Delicacies

Anthony Murtland, TEAN Abroad: Australia Fall 2024

The delicious food is one thing that I am still thinking about from my trip down under. Since I lived off-campus I had to cook everything for myself, which ended up being a lot of fun. My favorite easy, but still Australian, meal to make for myself in the apartment was vegemite on toast – super yummy and a great when paired with a sunrise. Whenever I wasn’t cooking for myself in the apartment, my friends and I were out trying different cafes and restaurants in the local area. We had so many favorite spots depending on what we were in the mood for, whether that be No Name Lane for coffee in the morning before class, or Bam Bam Bakehouse for brekkie on the weekend. During our first week in Australia, we had an orientation week in a different city than where our host university was located. During this first week in Cairns, we got to try a bunch of unique foods! We tried emu, kangaroo steaks, and crocodile (in the top right!!). One of my favorite things to have while down under was an Aussie staple – the snack pack (bottom left!). A snack pack consists of fries that are loaded with melted cheese, chicken or lamb, and a ton of sauces, and is a great way to end a night out. While abroad I would say my eating habits were a lot healthier. I ate a ton of fresh fruits and drank coconut water to stay hydrated. I ate a lot less junk food and less snacks throughout the day, unless I was enjoying fruit on the beach. These habits have translated back home too, and I have become more mindful of what I am eating and how it makes me feel!
