Not only did our group get to explore and enjoy the beautiful city of Munich throughout our stay, but we also had the privilege to take a day trip to Salzburg, Austria. The morning started off a bit hectic seeing that my roommate and I accidentally got our passports stuck in the apartment safe. However, the staff at the Munich Living Hotel were very attentive and helped us immediately.
Then, we met our group at the train station for a quick breakfast consisting of cappuccinos and salami pickle sandwiches on a pretzel bun. The train ride from Munich to Salzburg was around two hours long, which our group found to be the perfect opportunity to get some extra hours of sleep in. After arriving in Salzburg, we headed to Zwettlers for lunch; I got to try oxtail for the first time, and it was delicious. We then went on a guided city tour in order to learn about the rich culture and history of Salzburg.
We got to visit famous sites such as Schloss Hellbrunn, Mirabell Palace, and Mozart’s Birthplace. While walking around, I took notice to how intricate and stunning the architecture is in Salzburg. The styles include medieval, Baroque, and modern and are connected by rustic cobblestone streets. Next, our group got free time before heading back to Munich; we decided to visit Fortress Hohensalzburg, one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. To save money, we opted out of taking the incline to get to the castle. Instead, our group got quite the workout in by trekking up the steep hill in the rain to the entrance of the castle. We were glad we walked, however, because we got to see some amazing views of the Alps and the landscape of Salzburg. Once we arrived at the castle, we took a series of spiraling staircases and small passageways to get to an outlook at the top of the castle. It was so peaceful looking out over the city and appreciating it with each other.
After our adventure at Fortress Hohensalzburg, we walked around to explore the small shops in the city. I got some Mozart balls, chocolates that are only produced and sold in Austria. They were small dark chocolate truffles with marzipan inside and were delicious. To conclude our wonderful day trip to Salzburg, Austria, the whole group got gelato on our way back to the train station.
