Kevork Zeibari, Business, Technology, and Engineering: The German Way Summer 2024
Being an American in Germany brought its own set of experiences and insights. Many locals were curious about American culture and lifestyle. They were eager to ask questions about everything from our education system to our perspectives on global events. I encountered a few stereotypes about Americans, but these moments were great opportunities for mutual learning. We discussed and debunked some of these stereotypes, leading to deeper understanding and respect.
I enjoyed sharing stories about life in the United States, including our traditions, holidays, and daily routines. This exchange of experiences helped bridge cultural gaps and build connections. Conversely, I learned a lot about German customs, etiquette, and values. For example, I quickly adapted to the more reserved and punctual nature of German interactions, which contrasted with the often more casual and spontaneous American style.
One aspect of being “American” in Germany that was a little unexpected for me was how quiet everyone was in Germany. As we traveled on public transit or in other public places, we would chat with each other and often I would notice that we were the only ones that were chatting or that we were magnitudes louder than everyone around us. (It’s also possible that we are just very loud people). People were always staring. It was definitely a little embarrassing at first, but we all learned to tone it down toward the end of the trip.
Regardless, the friendships formed during this short period were meaningful and enriching. Despite the brief duration, the shared experiences and mutual curiosity helped us form strong bonds that have lasted beyond the program. We still keep in touch, sharing updates and reminiscing about our time together in Munich. Overall, my time in Munich was not only an academic journey but also a cultural immersion that broadened my horizons and left me with lasting friendships and unforgettable memories.
