Learning Abroad: A Catalyst for Growth

Dikchhya Kharel, Leadership in the Himalayas Summer 2024

Studying abroad has significantly influenced my academic, career, and personal goals in numerous ways. My recent experience in India as part of the Leadership in the Himalayas program was transformative, reshaping my perspective on education, career aspirations, and personal growth.

Academically, the experience has broadened my understanding of global education. The courses in Mussoorie provided a unique blend of theoretical knowledge and practical leadership skills, unlike anything I had encountered before. Learning in a different cultural context opened my eyes to new educational approaches and pedagogies. This exposure has inspired me to pursue further studies with an international focus, considering graduate programs that emphasize global leadership and cross-cultural communication. The diverse learning environment in India has also motivated me to engage more actively in international academic exchanges and collaborations, fostering a more comprehensive and inclusive educational journey.

Career-wise, the program has solidified my desire to work in a field that requires strong leadership and cross-cultural competencies. The ten-day trek through the Himalayas was a rigorous test of endurance, teamwork, and strategic planning. These experiences have enhanced my leadership skills and highlighted the importance of adaptability and resilience in achieving career success. I now aim to pursue a career in international development or global project management, where I can leverage these skills to address complex challenges and drive impactful change. The ability to navigate diverse cultural landscapes and work effectively with people from various backgrounds has become a crucial component of my career aspirations. This experience has also underscored the importance of sustainable practices and community engagement, leading me to consider roles that focus on environmental sustainability and social responsibility.

On a personal level, studying abroad has profoundly impacted my self-confidence and independence. Being away from home for the first time in a completely different cultural setting was initially daunting. However, the experience has made me more self-reliant and confident in my abilities to handle new and challenging situations. Navigating the slippery slopes of the Himalayas and overcoming physical and mental hurdles has instilled a sense of accomplishment and resilience. These personal growth experiences have made me more open to stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing new opportunities.

Furthermore, the cultural immersion in India has deepened my appreciation for diversity and global interconnectedness. Interacting with people from different cultural backgrounds has enriched my understanding of global issues and enhanced my empathy and cultural sensitivity. These qualities are invaluable in both my personal and professional life, helping me build stronger relationships and work more effectively in diverse teams.

In short, studying abroad has been a catalyst for significant growth and change in my academic, career, and personal goals. The experience has broadened my educational horizons, solidified my career aspirations, and fostered personal development. It has equipped me with essential skills and perspectives that will guide me in my future endeavors, making me more adaptable, culturally aware, and resilient. This transformative journey has reaffirmed my commitment to pursuing a path that embraces global challenges and opportunities, aiming to make a meaningful impact in an increasingly interconnected world.
