Reflection and Advice: Plus3 South Korea

Jacob Sedwick, Plus3 South Korea Summer 2024

As I reflect on day 5 of Plus 3 South Korea, I will summarize the day then offer some advice to future Plus 3 students or students considering joining an abroad program. Today started a little later so I was able to get up early, hit the gym, and have a good breakfast. After that it was off to Taekwondo which was an incredible experience filled with self reflection, balance, kicking and some board breaking. I learned a lot about Korea and martial arts in this experience and it really made me appreciate the Korean culture and people even more. After Taekwondo it was back to the subway to go to Seoul city hall, but first we got free time for lunch where I had the best fried chicken I have ever had at an authentic Korean restaurant with my group. After lunch our tour of the city hall began, a giant glass and eco friendly building designed by and for the people. The building had me in awe most of the tour as it was extremely high tech and showed just how much of a smart city Seoul is. Our tour guide in addition was great showing us the mayor of South Korea’s current and former offices and constantly giving us good photo opportunities. As the tour concluded, Dr.Yun gave the groups a scavenger hunt before we returned to the hotel where he gave us a picture of a building around Seoul and we had to find it and the winner gets a mystery prize. To the shock of no one my group pulled it out. Finally we concluded the night with another Korean authentic dinner of beef bulgogi and many many sides. Now we look forward to tomorrow and our tour of Yonsei University and learning more about the business and engineering aspects of the great country of South Korea.

Now some advice for students thinking about or taking plus3 in the future.

  1. Enjoy every moment as you never know if youll be back in location or with the same group of awesome people ever again.
  2. Be a sponge and learn as much as possible and ask questions.
  3. Take that leap and choose ur dream program!
  4. Be respectful to local unwritten and written rules.
  5. Learn about your group members as they could become your closest friends.
  6. Take a plus3 course on a topic that is interesting and relevant to you.
  7. Take the trip seriously but not too seriously as it should be for as much for personal growth as academic and professional.
