Jacob Sedwick, Plus3 South Korea Summer 2024
Today was the first real day of activities for our group and, man, it was a packed one. The day began for me at 5 AM, still trying to adjust to the jet lag and 14-hour time difference. After a quick gym session and shower, it was time for breakfast. Sejong Hotel truly has one of the best breakfast spreads I have seen with ranges from traditional Korean dishes to more western options. After a great breakfast and a bit of nudging from Dr.Yun to be more adventurous in my food choices, it was time to visit Gyeongbuk Palace to witness the changing of the guards and tour the facility. The changing of the guards at the palace was truly one of the best things I have got to witness in person considering the history behind it and the incredible presentation and backdrop. After that, it was time to visit the Bluehouse which is where the President lived in previous years in Korea. The architecture of the buildings, palaces, and temples in Korea is truly spectacular, and being able to see it in person has been an honor. After a bit more sightseeing and subway riding, we had lunch. Lucky for us we were joined by Dr.Yun who ordered us some of his favorite authentic Korean street food dishes. The food at lunch was great and it was an awesome learning experience to eat and talk with Dr.Yun a bit about his home country. Then in the afternoon we traveled to Namdaemun Market, which was the biggest outdoor shopping area I have ever seen: from food to clothes to bags to anything you can imagine. Due to the selection options, it was very overwhelming, but my group and I will definitely be back for some souvenirs. After yet another subway ride back I write this blog in my room before our big welcome dinner tonight. I am very excited to try some more Korean food and learn as much as I can about this great country and city. I look forward to tomorrow when I’ll write again and fill you all in.
