Studying Abroad 101

Laura Huston, Global Business Institute: London Spring 2024

Before I began my studies in London, I was fortunate enough to take with me advice from friends who had completed their own trips abroad. However, after my own journey to London, there are many things I’ve learned first hand and wish I would have known beforehand. To begin, the top piece of advice before
you leave the country is to pack light. I was told this many times as I began to fill my suitcase and I was so grateful I listened. I bought many things throughout my semester such as clothes, shoes, and souvenirs, so leaving extra room was an ideal start.

A second piece of advice I have is to begin to plan trips and places you want to see early and this is one thing I wish I did better. In the beginning of the program it seems as if the time is endless, but the time will begin to fly by. Therefore, planning out your trips weeks ahead will not only save money, but allow you to plan the specifics of the trips as well. Also, this is important to do for the tourist attractions that you want to visit and see in London. There are a handful of things I wasn’t able to do before I left due to the lack of time, which could have been planned out ahead (there is SO much to do and see in London).

Third, a piece of advice I would share is to meet people early on and talk to everyone in your class! Through my study abroad experience I was able to meet so many amazing friends from all over the country and many from Pitt as well! Everyone is also looking to meet people and explore the beautiful city, so take advantage of it! These friends will make your experience that much better and you’ll have people alongside you to make lasting memories.

Lastly, exit your comfort zone. It is easier said than done, but don’t be afraid to say yes to everything especially early on! Again, you only have limited time so getting yourself out there and exploring early on is so important and will be very beneficial in the long run. This also includes participating in lectures and class discussion and getting to know your professors. Overall, all these things that I’ve discussed will help to create a wonderful and memorable study abroad experience in London!
