Traveling to Switzerland: Tips and Tricks

Michelle Chung, Healthcare Delivery in Switzerland Summer 2023

Before my flight to Switzerland, I had very little time to research how to prepare for Europe and pack the right clothes for the weather. I wish I had known Switzerland’s weather better so that I could bring appropriate clothes. In my time in Switzerland from May 1st to May 14th, the days were mostly rainy and flipped from sunny to cloudy in a matter of minutes. Bringing a rain jacket, umbrella, and long pants was a good idea, but I probably should have brought more. The days were also quite cold, ranging from 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, which was not appropriate for the short sleeves and spring dresses I had packed. Also, packing more clothes would have been a good idea, as there was no time or space to wash my laundry.

As for miscellaneous travel items, I wish I had known to bring a European plug adapter, as I had to borrow my friend’s for most of the times I had to charge my devices. I also wish I had bought a fanny pack for easy carry-on items like my phone and AirPods when I am going on hikes. Fanny packs are also handy for areas where pickpocketing is a large issue, as your personal belongings are close to your body and cannot be easily taken. Also, it is important to bring medications such as inhalers, as there are many smokers in Europe.

As I was a part of a study abroad course, I wish I had completed my assignments, such as presentations, before going to another country. The WiFi in my hotel rooms was spotty, and I was very tired during the nights after my busy day of going to clinics and traveling. Also, there was very little time in the day to get my work done. I wish I had spent my nights in Switzerland relaxing after a long day instead of stressing over assignments. Lactaid is also an important essential, as many Swiss meals are based on dairy products. The fondue, raclette, and gelato are very delicious, but it was difficult for me to eat them without Lactaid.

I also wish I knew about SBB Mobile, a transportation app that tracks buses, trains, and trams in Switzerland. This app allows you to buy tickets and see different routes and travel options to get to different destinations. I had difficulty using Google Maps to find restaurants and hotels, but with SBB Mobile, I was able to navigate the transportation system more easily.
