Grant Clark, Plus3 SSOE Transfer Plus Czech Republic Summer 2023
On my second day of my trip to Prague I realized that just like anything, the trip had its pros and cons. There were some significant highs but some sobering lows. The highs were amazing. I absolutely loved the food. I had several bread dumplings (a local food) and they were sensational. I’m committed to learning how to make them because they were that good. The food was also portioned perfectly! Every meal was served in a way that was manageable but still filling. I found myself taking my time and just enjoying the moment during each meal. However, what was sobering was the lack of diversity, particularly as it pertains to the black community. I can probably count on one hand the number of black people I saw, and I can count on one finger the number of black people that came on the trip… including me. It can become underwhelming not having much cultural representation in your environment. I wrestled with the possibility that my skin tone might have been a surprise to the people around me and that my culture was a question mark. Yet I’m hopeful. I’m hopeful that I was the change in this environment. I’m hopeful that I helped make black people on global experience trips normal. I’m hopeful that through my attitude and participation, I helped make black representation familiar to all.
