Amya Castellanos, Healthcare in British Context Summer 2023

While this was my second time going abroad, I learned many new things from living in a new country and advice I would give students who also hope to go abroad. First, the most important thing is to be confident in yourself. Adapting to not only a new culture but meeting people can be overwhelming, but if you are confident in yourself, anyone can overcome these challenges. Remember to always be yourself when meeting people and never rush into forming friend groups just because. It is challenging for me to be out there socially, but I was confident in my ability to travel to cities I have always wished to, as no one could stop me from achieving my goals. Eventually, everyone will find a friend group but try not to rush into things and try to become someone who you are not. Another piece of advice I would give to someone planning on studying in this specific program is to be prepared to be overwhelmed with all the activities and sites to see! There are so many historical monuments, museums, towns, football games, and galleries in such a short period in London. Before arriving in London, I encourage everyone to write down activities they want to see and plan out a schedule to use their time wisely but see as much as the city offers. I also recommend budgeting when abroad. London is a pretty expensive city, with a relatively high conversion from pounds to dollars. Having a strict weekly budget is a great way to ensure that by the end of the program, you have enough money for personal shopping and possibly restaurants by the end. I also suggest not over-packing because, during your time abroad, you will buy things from your trips for yourself or family members, which will require lots of space in your luggage. So, pack things you know you wear often and look at the weather to ensure you pack only the essentials.
