The main piece of advice I would give to others who are planning to study in this program would be to ask plenty of questions. This trip was genuinely a once-in-a-lifetime experience where I had the opportunity to interact with knowledgeable individuals who shared their expertise with me. Lectures were a significant component of the program, and we heard from experts on gold mining, medicinal plants, infectious disease, and other factors that impact health. The lectures were comprehensive and engaging, but I recommend approaching the lecturers during or after the fact and asking questions. By doing this, I learned a lot and heard many stories I’ll always appreciate and never forget. Everyone I met in Suriname was eager to share their knowledge and experiences and happy to answer any questions. We also visited the US Embassy and met the US ambassador, Robert J. Faucher. There was an opportunity to ask him questions, and I would recommend doing so. It was a great experience and got you thinking about the intersection of international affairs and public health.
I also want to stress the importance of coming on this trip with an open mind. This trip was an opportunity to explore new cultures, languages, food, and much more. Everyone welcomed us everywhere and was more than happy to share their culture with us. Though many of the cultures in Suriname were unfamiliar, coming with an open mind allowed me to connect with the people I met and appreciate their cultures and traditions. I was thankful for the opportunity to try various types of foods that I’d never had before. All of the food that I had in Suriname was delicious. Also, the fruits in Suriname were very fresh. It’s worth it to try all of the foods that you can. This likely goes without saying, but the last piece of advice I have is to have fun and be safe. We had a lot of fun on our trip and spent much time outdoors. It’s important to bring crucial items to keep you safe and healthy, including insect repellant and sunscreen, especially with it being so hot and wet in Suriname during the season the trip takes place. There’s a lot of time to explore Suriname, and it’s a beautiful country, so take lots of pictures and videos and truly enjoy every moment. The Public Health Threats in Suriname program was a great study abroad experience, and I’m grateful for all the lessons it taught me.
